What are the benefits of Cold Chamber Die Casting?

Cold chamber die casting is preferred over other manufacturing processes as parts and products can be cast with a wide range of sizes and shapes. Die cast parts are stronger than plastic, more durable and able to withstand a broader range of temperatures. Components can be cast with a combination of both thick and thin cross-sections which is a great benefit to the automotive world for lightning or light-weighting of cars. Casting products on cold chamber die casting machinery allows manufacturers to design and produce complex parts to near net shape, requiring little or no further machining. Additionally, die cast parts are generally 95% recyclable.

FAQ: What is the Cold Chamber Die Casting Process?

Cold chamber die casting machines are used with alloys including magnesium, aluminum, copper, brass, bronze and rarely stainless steel along with other alloys that have a high melting point. Cold chamber machines are also used in the more exotic die casting processes such as horizontal and vertical squeeze die casting, semi-solid casting, metal matrix composite and the composite foundry molding (moulding) processes. In the cold chamber process, molten metal is poured into a "cold chamber", commonly called a "shot well" or "shot sleeve". The liquid metal is poured into the cold chamber at a location that is called the "pour hole". The metal can be poured using several different methods. It can poured manually with a hand ladle, by a dedicated automatic ladle, with a foundry robot or by a dosing (pumping) furnace. A plunger (similar to a piston) seals the cold chamber pour hole as it moves forward and then forces the liquid metal into the closed die at very high pressures and velocity. This is known as the injection process. After the liquid metal chills (freezes) in the die, the die casting machine opens and the casting is ejected from the die and removed from the machine. The die is then sprayed with a release agent that keeps parts from sticking to the die. The machine closes and the process repeats. Depending on the size of the machine cycle rates can vary from about 40 cycles per hour all the way to 300 cycles per hour.

Who are the major Manufacturers of Cold Chamber Die Casting Machines?

Manufactures from Europe include: Agrati, Buhler, Colosio, Frech, Idra, Italpresse, Triulzi and Weingarten. From Japan Toshiba, Toyo Machinery, and Ube. What is the price or cost of a Used Cold Chamber Die Cast Machine?

Because cold chamber die casting machines range in size from smaller than 100 tons up to 4,500 tons the price varies dramatically. One hundred ton machines can cost as little as $80,000.00 and 4,500 ton machines can cost $3,000,000.00 or more.
