What is Hot Chamber Die Casting?

Hot chamber die casting is the process where the injection system is immersed in pool of molten metal, most commonly Zinc, Zamak, Lead or Pewter. The furnace is designed as an integral part of the hot chamber machine and is attached to the die casting machine via a feeding system called a gooseneck and nozzle. This gooseneck fills with molten metal and a plunger forces the metal through the nozzle and into the die cavity. Once the metal solidifies, the die will open, the part is ejected, and the process repeats. This die casting process is only suitable for alloys that do not corrode the injection components such as zinc, Zamak, lead and pewter and Magnesium.

What are the Advantages of the Hot Chamber Die Casting Process?

Hot chamber die casting offers the following advantages; the ability to cast complex parts in a near net shape as cast, very fast cycle times (up to 1,000 cycles per hour), secondary machining is minimized or eliminated due to the near net shape of the cast parts and hot chamber machines can be fully automated which reduces labor costs. The repeatability and durability of hot chamber die cast parts is excellent and die castings are generally 95% recyclable without degradation.

How much does a Hot Chamber Die Casting Machine cost?

Because hot chamber die casting machines range in size from as small at 4 tons up to 1,200 tons the price varies dramatically. A 10 ton machine can cost as little as $30,000.00 and 1,200 ton machine can cost well over $1,000,000.00.
